types of extruders
• single screw
– injection molding – profile extrusion and foaming

• less complicated than twin-screw extruder (simple gearbox, single screw, simple barrel) → less expensive • less capable for mixing and de-volatilization than twinscrew • drag flow is not suitable for all materials, esp. liquids and low-viscosity gels

• twin-screw counter-rotating
– pvc – foaming – shear-sensitive materials, esp. wood

• screws and barrels usually non-segmented • low speed (40 rpm screw speed typical, 200 rpm maximum), high torque → low power • positive displacement pump • mixing capability limited by low screw speed • de-volatilization limited by poor surface renewal
